They dreamed of a castle with privacy and views – views befitting the kingdom. Their castle would be like no other. The setting needed to be less than an hour from San Francisco. They recognized the perfect setting the moment they saw it. Nestled in a Mount Diablo valley in Alamo, CA, this 2.22-acre site provides almost 360-degree views, including vistas of the Las Trampas ridgeline.

Once the land was secured the dream unfolded. The imagination ran wild. They began searching for and collecting construction materials – items that could be repurposed to create this most unusual home – over 130,000 used bricks found in an abandoned Oakland warehouse, ridge beams, rafters, and braces reclaimed from the former JCPenney store in downtown San Francisco, light posts that once illuminated the perimeter of Lake Merritt in the 1910s, a chandelier retrieved from the Fremont High School gymnasium, a fireplace mantle from a bar in Jack London Square in Oakland, and cabinetry made from a dismantled barn in Napa Valley.castle for sale in california

With attention to every detail, it took three years to bring the Castle of Alamo to life. Today, it represents pure artistry atop an Alamo hill. Visually it is impressive. Even the roof makes a statement, with hand-chipped slate tile and exposed roof rafters salvaged from an abandoned Oakland army depot. Each rafter’s end is hand-carved into the face of an animal or another intriguing object.

There are turrets surrounding huge outdoor terraces, and herringbone-patterned brick patios perfectly positioned to take in the views. Beautifully landscaped, walkways meander through English-inspired gardens with quiet places to sit and meditate. There’s even a place for a guesthouse or studio.

Inside every room is filled with visual interest. Salvaged brick has been painstakingly hand-laid to create never boring wavy walls. Arching ceilings, some 25 feet tall, use reclaimed wood and huge recycled beams and ironwork. A stunning staircase has been constructed using old church pews. Heavy hand-crafted wooden doors with iron fittings secure castle rooms. The dining room walls are covered in hammered copper and have views of a two-story cascading waterfall. Slate, radiant-heated flagstone floors flow through much of the castle.

The kitchen is huge and open with cabinetry made from barn wood. There are custom designed stained-glass cabinet doors. Cured walnut from the 1960s was reclaimed to create smooth countertops.

There are more architecturally interesting features that can ever be listed, but include, numerous wood-burning fireplaces and wood stoves all surrounded by beautiful brick-work, a master bedroom with a turret room complete with exposed beams and soaring ceiling, a real ship’s porthole, and brick shelves that appear as steps.

A guest bedroom includes an actual “press ladder” reclaimed from the press room at the Oakland Tribune.

There are lofts, window seats, and catwalks, and even a confessional door from a church in England all adding to the uniqueness of this incredible home.

Yes, by design, it is a castle, yet there are no drafty rooms or damp dungeons. The Castle of Alamo is luxury at its finest and built with all the comforts for a modern-day king or queen.

Located conveniently less than an hour from the Napa Valley, Silicon Valley, and coast.
